The Acute Block is a 6-week glimpse of what life will be like working in acute secondary care, covering: the accident and emergency department; acute medicine department; emergency eye clinic; and the intensive care unit.
The rota has been designed so that students spend approximately half of the block at UHCW and half of the block at Warwick Hospital. Some of the shifts will take place in the evenings and weekends, giving students a broad clinical exposure and experience in working in acute services. The block also involves a range of simulation training opportunities. Students will spend time in the Simulation Suite learning about non-technical skills, human factors and management of acute conditions. There is also the Simulated On-Call session where students experience handling a mock on-call shift and responding to bleeps.
The clinical placements are interspersed with small group tutorials and lectures to assist in students’ development during the block.
